MATTHEW’S LABEL:

2008 Kalen's Big Boy Blend Syrah

In the fantastical world of Matthew Doubek, a collision is happening every day. Illustration meets materials found in dumpsters. Paint mixes with old magazine clippings. Brushes merge with oversized pencils and permanent markers. Collage hangs on freshly sanded wood. And thank God, beer lives in harmony with jellybeans.

Matthew Doubek has been bringing his fascinating tales to life through painting and illustration under the moniker “alias krap masters studio” for more than a decade. The College of Visual Arts in St. Paul, MN, gave him a BFA degree, but after that he escaped to a slightly warmer climate, the state of Colorado. In the past several years, Doubek has been creating his whimsical art from his studio in Louisville, CO.

His techniques range from inverted drawing to transferring crazy images via xerox to using salvaged materials ranging from vintage magazines to old paint. To be honest, he was eco-friendly when eco-friendly meant you were a bum digging through dumpsters to find other people’s crap.

It is this synergy of different elements that unite characters, places, and stories into one piece of work. Upon looking at an alias krap masters studio original, one may be incited to chuckle, or turn the head slightly askew, or just to stare in fascination from the depth inherent in his work.. His illustration brings to life characters found in old magazine clippings, giving them wrinkles in their faces and depth in their character. They may have lived a decent life in a 1964 issue of Life Magazine, but they are just starting to bloom when this guy gets a hand on them. Matthew might have to spend the next 3 days pulling gel medium from his fingers, but he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Matthew Doubek’s work has been featured in numerous national publications, and exhibited in galleries across the country, including the cities of New York, Denver, Atlanta, and Minneapolis.
