MIKE’S LABEL:

2008 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

Mike Shine is a Bay Area painter who works out of the funky retro coastal cabin he shares as a studio/second home with his wife and their three sons — all artists. His work can be described as a colorful, sometimes disturbing mixture of driftwood, house paint, Nordic mythology, insomnia, 1970’s pop culture, absinthe, Teutonic philosophy, his wife Marianne, and woodworking skills left over from a previous life. Shine’s art explores how themes of classic mythology, philosophy and psychology relate to modern day mankind. “But in an accessible way, without the pretension, and bullshit,” he emphasizes. Recently his cabin was recreated in its entirety for the Museum of Craft and Folk Art in San Francisco. His work has been featured in galleries internationally. And his installation “Flotsam’s Wonder Wagon” was featured at SFMOMA for their 75th Anniversary in January 2010.
