Tasting Notes

Barrel Climber wines not only represent what we think are outstanding, characterful selections that stand out to us each vintage, but also ones that speak to us personally. This Chardonnay really struck us as being a great example of gloriously pure, energetic Sonoma Coast fruit with an old-world sensibility.

Singled out from some of our most intense lots of the vintage (unsurprisingly much of that being the snappy, acid-driven Hyde clone from Green Acres) we aged in a combination of Puncheon and traditionally sized barrels.

On the nose there’s an undeniably sexy matchstick/gunflint/minerality that greets you right away and leads straight through to the taught, long finish. On the palate, we get loads of lemon curd, lemon oil, crunchy Honeycrisp apple, clove and nutmeg, all framed with just the right amount of toasty French oak. We’re a little obsessed with the tension and interplay between fruit, minerality and oak on this one.

If you’re inspired by great white Burgundy and its kin, we think you’ll flip for this cuvée.
