Tasting Notes

The EK Russian River Valley Syrah of the past few years has proudly grown into our newest vineyard-designated wine! Atoosa’s Vineyard now brings its own distinctive expression of Syrah to our line-up. Located on the cool southern edge of the Russian River Valley, the superb fruit from this the late-ripening spot has been adding a vital element to our Kalen’s and formed the core of our Russian River Valley Syrah since 2012. With the nexus of experience, true partnership with a great grower, and the excellent 2014 vintage, it's time to let Atoosa’s shine all on its own.

Surprisingly light on its feet for such a dark and dramatically colored wine, this is classic Russian River Valley Syrah, rich in fruit without any ponderous jamminess. Just 10% new oak and roughly 40% whole-cluster fermentation were employed to maximum effect. Atoosa’s greets the nose and palate with waves of creamy black fruit, exotic sweet spices, black pepper and touches of anise and fennel. Ripe, polished tannins help to provide a very satisfying finish and the potential for a long life in the cellar.

We’re huge fans of Syrah and are thrilled to offer another gorgeous example of this often misunderstood and underappreciated variety. Fans of really great Syrah (you know who you are!) will find a lot to love here for many years to come.
