Tasting Notes

By design, Kalen’s is always our most fruit forward Syrah, centering on the riper, showier sources in our portfolio. Since each site is so unique, every vineyard and vintage offer us new and different pieces of the puzzle to play with. Following the structured and firm 2018 vintage, this new wine displays more immediate pleasure while losing none of the bold core that enables it to be so cellar worthy.

Mountain fruit from Steiner vineyard provides classic structure, bramble and intense red fruit that pairs beautifully with the more purple, exotically spiced fruit from Atoosa’s Vineyard on the cool border of the Russian River Valley. Together, these two very different sources fit together perfectly to produce a truly satisfying final blend that explodes with black and blueberry, cassis, black plum, cocoa and very subtle oak to round it all out. Just delicious.

Tannins were actively managed once again with extended time on the skins after fermentation and this vintage enjoyed an extra three months in barrel allowing for further integration, but as usual, we think Kalen’s truly begins to reveal its glory several years after release. If you can’t keep your hands off it (no blame whatsoever) please either decant for an hour or allow it a bit of time in your glass, then enjoy as always!
