Tasting Notes

Surprisingly approachable this early in the game, the 2017 sports a graceful, creamy, chocolatey lushness while still retaining the salty black olive, bramble and smoke accents we all expect. These earthy/herbal qualities are more in support of the gorgeous, up-front fruit this vintage than past renditions.

There’s no doubt that Las Madres is one of our most unapologetically polarizing wines – we would expect nothing less. If you love it, you will absolutely LOVE it. If not, that’s why we make Kalen’s Big Boy! Wine is all about finding something for everyone. We admit to making this wine for ourselves and remain delighted by all those who care to join us.

All that being said, the 2017 is as much of a crowd pleaser as we’ve ever produced from this vineyard, so give it a try if you haven’t. Lots of pump-overs during fermentation, 75% whole cluster along with a little co-fermented viognier and an extended maceration to soften the tannins made for a glorious finished wine. No new oak at all. 20 months sleep in neutral barrels before bottling.

While wonderfully inviting on release (an uncommon suggestion from us with our Syrah) the 2017 vintage will only improve for the next decade at least, so please hang on to some for more magical and delicious experiences down the road!
