TASTING NOTES

Settling into its new home as a Spring Release, the 2014 Las Madres is worth the wait! Our 5th vintage with this esteemed vineyard, we’re really getting a grip on how this cooler-climate fruit likes to be handled.

First: 0% new oak. Everything goes into neutral barrels now and is the better for it. We tried every new barrel under the sun over the last five years and have learned that there’s so much gorgeous natural character from this vineyard that any amount of new oak just gets in the way.

Second: Lots of whole-cluster fermentation enhances the spicy aromatics and provides extra backbone while elevating the site’s distinctive character rather than dominating it.

Third: A longer time on the skins translates to a silkier, sexier Las Madres. At first it may seem counter-intuitive, but extended maceration produces a softer, fuller, rounder wine from this wonderful site.

Fourth: Holy COW, this wine is delicious!

Once again, the cooler climate of the Carneros region allowed us to craft a Syrah with plenty of California fruit while retaining all of the spicy, earthy character and distinctive olive tapenade notes that make this vineyard so special. If you have any of the 2011 or 2012 vintage in your cellar, crack one open to see what a little age does to these enchanting, seductive beauties. Then stash some of the 2014 in their places to keep yourself in good supply!
