Tasting Notes

A new name. A fantastic new block and clone in the mix. The same pure coastal Chardonnay celebration as always. Now dubbed "1 KM West" (in reference to the "1 km west of Florencia" on its artist label), this 2014 Sonoma Coast bottling is the most elegant, least oaked, vibrantly acid-driven Chardonnay in our lineup. Yet the addition of fruit from the Hyde block of the Sangiacomo family’s Green Acres Vineyard helps this wine reach a whole new level of depth and completeness. With just over 3% new oak finding its way into the final blend, we feel this is a compelling and wonderfully refreshing take on the variety.

Citrus and stone fruit dominate the aromas, accented with a distinct nuttiness and delicate honeysuckle. Medium bodied on the palate, the fruit and acid are wonderfully integrated with each other. Finishing with freshness and energy, light custard notes linger on and on. Unusually forward and seamless already, it will be hard not to crack these open early.

In harmony with an early pick of the Rued clone from Stiling Vineyard, the Hyde Block has brought not only more weight and length to the final cuvee, but excellent and very polished natural acidity. We’re happy to report that the 2014 should drink quite well as a youngster, but as usual, we’d be thrilled if you could sock some away in the cellar. It should provide many years of pleasure!
