TASTING NOTES

This lovingly tended site, smack in the middle of Pinot and Chardonnay country, continues to provide us with exceptionally distinctive fruit for our vineyard-designated Las Madres Syrah.

Opening with savory aromas of baking chocolate, forest floor and smoky/meaty overtones, the 2013 proceeds to fill out on the palate with plenty of ample black fruit flavors and pepper. As in years past, the hallmark black olive tapenade element we celebrate and completely geek out over is also front and center. If you love it like we do, you know exactly what we mean. We could spend hours just smelling this wine!

Warm and dry conditions in 2013 allowed us to increase the whole cluster portion during fermentation to bring out more spicy nuances and structure. With no new oak whatsoever, this wine was aged in once- to four-times used barrels, giving oak only a minor supporting role. The result is the vineyard tells its story all by itself, and what a story it is!

We absolutely love to pour this for guests as it regularly wins over the room with sheer personality… even folks who claim to “not really like Syrah.” Yeah, we know who you are! And we're glad to help you change your mind. Delicious now with a serious decant, we’re confident the 2013 Las Madres will evolve and grow for a solid decade or more.
