COLLEEN’S LABEL:

Sometimes art really does mirror life; in this case, both Colleen’s life and a brand new one we were endeavoring to create. Fascinated by the reproductive cycle that connects all living things, Colleen wove an intricate mesh of nature and ancient fertility symbols into her painting as we tried to conceive — and she ultimately carried and delivered — our first baby boy!

Colleen’s work explores the relationship between fertility and divinity expressed in icons such as the lotus flower and the pomegranate. Contrasting intricate detail with large areas of color, she strikes a delicate balance between the microscopic and the macroscopic.

“The more I painted, the more I discovered a connection between myself and the rest of nature as reproductive beings. And now, with the birth of our son Kalen, I understand even more personally the depth and beauty of that connection.”

Facing the exhilaration and exhaustion of motherhood every day, Colleen nonetheless continues to paint. On top of that, she calmly listens to my worries as I toil away at the cellar, in the office or out at the vineyards — surely an undeserved fate, but one she handles with good humor and grace. – Kent
