Francis Berry

Francis Berry

2005“Compelling works of art suggest that we are not alone in the world, that there is solidarity in human empathy, that we can share our true feelings and thoughts with one another. Whether we respond to life with joy, sadness or anything in between, we can channel it through art.

Making art keeps my inner self alive and in balance with the outer world. Serendipitous encounters with thought-provoking words or resonant colors inspire my paintings and drawings. The work does not address realism in order to delve deeper into subjective consciousness — the thoughts, feelings and emotions that make me human. The repetition of a few contrasting colors within each composition animates and weaves together tragicomic casts of characters. Whimsical Entropy is the title of my current series of watercolors and paintings. While “whimsical” alludes to humor and spontaneity, “entropy” suggests tension between meaningful form and random texture. With no preconceived image to emulate, painting is good paint, intuition, the moment, a road to meaning...”

Francis was introduced to us by a friend and owner of a private wine storage facility where we keep a few precious (we hope) bottles. The more we learn about Francis and his work, the more invigorated and inspired we become. He’s one of the keenest observers we’ve met in a long while and an artist with a genuine and powerful voice that urges us all to pursue our dreams.
