I am constantly humbled by what I see in each of these images. I never know the results of a scan until I see the magic of the image emerge. The most unassuming flowers may become the most breathtaking subjects. Often, it’s the blossom tucked into the center of a bouquet, crushed and insignificant, that becomes the most inspiring study. Again and again, this work has led me to find unexpected beauty in unlikely places. Seeing people react to these images is immensely gratifying. Their astonishment and fascination echo my own. While my eye and craft help me to select the images and enhance them to be what they are, I cannot take credit for the bounty of nature that provides such a fertile ground for my observation. The emotional and sometimes visceral response people have to my subjects is a testament to our shared humanity. Observing the wonder in people’s faces gives me a connection to each and every person who has looked at a tiny flower, and stood in awe of the beauty it reveals. Neil was introduced to us by a mutual friend who thought his work would be perfect for our labels. Once we had a look for ourselves, we couldn’t have agreed more. His work reminds us to slow down and see the beauty in front of us every day. In harmony with his art, his generous nature and calm presence do just the same. |
My work explores the way technology mediates our perceptions of the natural world. I produce the image of each blossom by using high-resolution scanners. No traditional photographic apparatus is involved.
