... As to the wines themselves, you’ll find a few really lovely and highly recommended wines, quite a number of average to good efforts and a few laggards, which frankly is about what you would expect to find. The California stars in the 75+ producers that follow include, Ant Hill, Au Bon Climat, Emeritus, Eric-Kent, Etude, Flowers, Keller Estate, Lazy Creek Littorai, Longoria, ElMolino, Mount Eden, Native9, The Ojai Vineyard and Rivers-Marie ... 2005 Pinot Noir – Stiling Vineyard 90 pts. (From Russian River fruit and a 25% whole cluster fermentation regimen that was aged 16 months in 50% new wood and bottled without fining or filtration at 14.8%; 300 cases produced and priced at $38). A spicy and fresh crushed red berry fruit nose trimmed in barely perceptible wood leads to round, supple and relatively forward flavors that possess good depth and a generous amount of mid-palate fat though not surprisingly the finish displays a bit of youthful asperity though interestingly, less warmth than might be expected given an ample reported alcohol level. A quality effort that is reasonably well balanced, pure and delicious. Worth a look. 90/2009+ |
